The first thing you need to do to make sure you’re buying the right size pump is figure out the volume of your pool. If you already know this, you can skip ahead to the next step. If you need to figure out how many gallons of water your pool holds, you can take some measurements and do some simple calculations.

Start by figuring out the average depth of your pool. Take a measurement of the depth in the shallow end, and another measurement of the deep end. Add these numbers together and then divide by two to get the average depth. Now measure the length and width of your pool. Multiply length x width x average depth, and this will give you the volume of your pool.

There are 7.5 gallons of water in a cubic foot. So now you can multiply the volume of your pool by 7.5 to figure out approximately how many gallons of water your pool holds.
