What to Look for When Shopping for a Pool Basketball Hoop

Swimming in the pool is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. But if you want to do a little more than just splash around, or if you’re the competitive type, you might want to consider getting a basketball hoop for your pool. If a basketball hoop is the thing that your pool is missing, consider these helpful tips about what to look for when shopping for a pool basketball hoop.

Budget

Swimming pool basketball hoops come in different shapes and sizes and are available at a number of different price points. Some hoops are designed mainly for small children and these hoops can be purchased at a very inexpensive price, some are available for $20 or less. There are also some very high-end pool basketball hoops that can cost in the neighborhood of $1000.

A good hoop that will work well for most people can be purchased for about $150 to $200.

Different Types of Pool Basketball Hoops

Generally speaking, there are two different types of basketball hoops you can get for your pool. There is the kind that floats around in the water, or the kind that is out of the water and sits on your pool deck.

If you choose the floating type of hoop, you have a couple of different options here as well. Some floating basketball hoops have a few parts that snap together so they can be put together in a matter of minutes and you don’t even need to use any tools. There are also some inflatable options that are even easier to set up. You simply take them out of the box, blow them up, and you’re ready to go.

The other option is a hoop that sits on your pool deck. This is a better option if you want to have your basketball hoop in a fixed position, rather than floating around to different areas in the pool. The pool side basketball hoops also have a backboard that you won’t usually find in the floating options. The floating basketball hoops are great for little kids and the poolside options that sit on the deck are better if you want to have an actual basketball game.

Consider the Size and Height of the Basketball Hoop You Want

The floating basketball hoops will typically be approximately 2 to 3 feet above the surface of the water. The hoops that sit on your pool deck might be anywhere from 4 feet to 7 feet high. You can also get basketball hoops with different rim diameters. You can get a hoop that will fit a regulation sized basketball, or you can get a hoop that uses a mini basketball.

The Materials the Basketball Hoop Is Made of

The least expensive pool basketball hoops on the market will be made of cheap plastic. These types of hoops won’t last very long because the plastic decomposes over time when exposed to sunlight. If you want a basketball hoop that is going to last, look for one that is made from polyethylene or a high impact plastic.

It’s also important to look for a hoop that has metal components that are rust resistant. For example, you don’t want the screws that hold the rim in place to start rusting after just one season.

Do Some Comparison Shopping

Because basketball hoops for swimming pools come in different sizes, shapes, colors etc. it’s helpful if you can look at a lot of different options. Shopping online makes it easy to look at and compare a lot of different options very quickly. You’ll be able to see hoops of different colors and designs and it shouldn’t take too long to find something that catches your eye.

It’s also a good idea to look at customer reviews online. A pool basketball hoop may look good in photos and it may have an impressive list of features on the sales page, but you should take some time to see what customers are saying about it. If something looks good on paper, but customers are saying that it’s flimsy and breaks after just a couple of weeks, that would obviously be one to avoid.

When researching customer reviews, try to find at least a few reviews from people who have owned the hoop you’re looking at for several months, or even a year or more. There may be a lot of 5 star reviews from people who have had a basketball hoop for a few weeks and they are thrilled with it. Six months later, the bolts might start rusting or the plastic might crack. So look for a hoop that has not only a lot of positive reviews, but also reviews that indicate that the hoop you’re thinking about buying will stand the test of time.
